Back To School Supply Packs For those of you who ordered the packs: The Supply Packs will be in your child's classroom on the 1st day of school, with your child's name on the box. Thanks to April Mangrum for coordinating this first year of Back to School Supply Packs. Fall Fair The annual Fall Fair is coming up October 18th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Parents: If you are willing to work on Fall Fair planning and/or auction donations, please email the board@southwesternpto.org. When we all work together, we can do wonderful things for the school and our kids.

PTO vs PTA?
In a nutshell, PTAs are local groups that affiliate with the national PTA. These groups pay dues to their respective state PTAs and to national PTA and they receive benefits from same. PTO is the general acronym for the many groups (PTOs, PCCs, HSAs, etc.) that choose to remain independent. PTOs are free to write their own bylaws and they can either: a) not charge dues at all (a nice touch to encourage involvement); or b) keep whatever dues they do charge at their school. While PTA (perhaps because of the Harper Valley song and movie) is the most well-recognized acronym to the general public, these days more than 75% of K-8 parent-teacher groups are actually independent PTOs. Of the more than 112,000 K-12 schools in the United States, fewer than 22,000 of those still have formally-affiliated PTA units.

SWE Artwork Makes Soldiers Happy! 
"I really appreciate all the letters, artwork and care packages sent. They were shared with the other soldiers and helped remind us of home. The banner is hanging in the foyer of the building we live in and is really something to see when the sun shines in through the window behind it. I've seen grown, tough men stop what they were doing, walk up and put their hands up over where the kids have put their handprints. The First Sergeant's room is through a door on the opposite wall the banner hangs from, he told me the other day that he walks by soldiers talking about their kids and the projects they've done, just about every day. Please pass on the thanks and appreciation from our company to the thoughtful kids and teachers that made that banner for us."
